About
The Pinal County Detention Center houses on average 600 inmates a day. The Detention Center participates in the Federal Government’s 287g program. Right now we have six detention officers who have 287(g) authority. Through our 287g program in our jail, we have a 48 hour hold to allow ICE agents to take custody of those who have been identified as being in the country illegally. Our primary responsibility is to protect the people of Pinal County. We will continue to support our federal partners in any way that we can to ensure the safety and security of our communities and our citizens.
The Pinal County Jail operates under the management and supervision of the Pinal County Sheriff.
The Pinal County Jail is the third largest County Jail in the state of Arizona, having a rated capacity of 1,503. This places the Pinal County Jail into the Large Jail Category as defined by the National Institute of Corrections.
History
The existing Jail was opened April 1st, 1996, with a bed capacity of 472. Due to the explosive population growth within Pinal County it became necessary to expand the County Jail once again. In July 2006 a 1,031-bed expansion was opened. This expansion provides the appropriate conditions of confinement for the increased inmate population.
The Pinal County Jail was selected as a pilot site by the Nationals Sheriffs’ Association for Jail Operations for Accreditation. The accreditation is governed by legal-based standards established through case law. The Pinal County Jail received its first accreditation in June 2011 and was reaccredited in December 2013, receiving a “Level 1” rating which is the highest score possible. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Jail is the first Arizona Jail to receive its National Accreditation.

The Pinal County Jail confines individuals who have been arrested, charged with criminal offenses, and are awaiting disposition of their cases within the criminal justice system. The Jail also houses those individuals who have been sentenced to serve their respective sentences in the county jail.
